School Life | Mission Dolores Academy
On Wednesday mornings, adult volunteers are present to help tutor students and help them with their homework.
The day officially begins with a school wide assembly in the auditorium at 8am. Here important announcements are made followed by all students and parents reciting the school creed:
“I am MDA
I am chosen by God.
I am powerful and smart.
I will respect the right of others and I will SUCCEED!
I AM MDA!!!”
The creed was written to foster bonds between the school community and families, with parents taking on active roles as supporters of their children’s school identity and engagement.
Each class day begins with the instruction of core subjects, language arts and math. These are taught in the morning when students are most focused so that they may succeed in mastering the foundations of these subjects. As MDA is a blended learning school, students divide half of their time of these subjects on individualized online curriculum and then rotate to small, traditional teacher-led instruction. This rotation model allows students to learn at their own pace with immersive instructional programs balanced by small group instruction and direct support of their teachers.
Recess in the schoolyard is held twice a day for grades K-6 and once a day for grades 7 and 8. Students are also given healthy snacks during recess to stay energized in order to keep learning. A half hour lunch is held in the auditorium midday where students can rest and socialize with their peers.
Students also receive instruction in art, music, and physical education from specialized teachers throughout the week. All grades have project based art class and music once a week and P.E. twice a week.
MDA has an extended school day with dismissal at 3:45 for grades K-3 and 4:00pm for grades 4-8. Wednesdays are minimum days with 2pm dismissals for all grades. The After School Academic Program begins after dismissal and is open every day until 6:00pm for our working families.
